Sunday 12th July 2009 saw the first running of the Gateway Cycles Youth Challenge Event - a brand new race format for U16's consisting of 3 different stages around a specially deisgned twisty 800m course in the Pony Field at Glanusk Estate. Stage 1 was a lap based event racing clockwise around the course. Stage 2 was a time-trial, one lap against the clock on the same course. Stage 3 was another lap based race, this time anti-clockwise around the course.
After each stage the category leaders were awarded the "White Jersey" to show the other competitors exactly who they were chasing. Points were awarded according to position, 1pt for 1st place, 2pts for 2nd and so on, with the overall winner being the rider with the lowest number of points.
